Hello all...my last post was January 2nd, so I'll start from there!
Started the first work week of 2009 as planned...back to work and started the Chantix to stop smoking! Week started off as normal. Thursday the 8th was Radiologist visit! Radiologist went well....surgery site healed good and I can begin radiation...I had most of the mapping completed and set up schedule (start date January 22nd...25 treatments scheduled). While there I mentioned to him the pain in my right arm (opposite from cancer). He said we needed to get some test but since I was scheduled to see Oncologist the next morning, he wanted me to to discuss there. So I did...had my schedule visit on Friday AM...other then the pain in the non cancer side...everything was fine. But we needed to check why I was having pain! So since I do not do MRI very good....we set up XRay, then bone scan to try to find out what's up! So XRays & Bone Scan were scheduled and once completed we would then talk on phone a day or so after bone scan for results!! So I left Onc office and headed straight to B&W for XRays, Bone scan scheduled for the 13th! Went straight back to work after XRays and continued my day....then the call came! It was about 6:00PM Friday...it was the onc...XRays show some sort of cyst in my right arm in the area I told her the pain was. She said...."it could be benign, but I'm not very optimistic considering your history, so I would like to talk with you about bone scan results in person versus on the phone" OK...my first thought...it's moved to the bones and there is no cure!!! We scheduled appointment for results for Weds. 14th at noon!!!! So as you can imagine.....not a very good weekend!!! So I started....Prepare for worst and pray for the best!!!! we told everyone on the weekend the possibilities...by everyone...that's everyone but Caitlin & John Paul....Caitlin was out in California visiting John Paul and I didn't want to routine their visit! We told Caitlin when she arrived home Monday morning! So everyone knew the possibilities and I outlined how I wanted everything to work if this was it...both home & work! My thought was...I didn't want major decisions being made with emotion! So, on Monday went to work...remember Monday the 12th was quite smoking date.....primarily because I thought I would be starting radiation...now radiation start not until the 22nd and my nerves are shattered not knowing what the next few days are going to bring...so yes I smoked...only 4 or 5 the entire day, but I smoked! Tuesday was Bone Scan...into Dana Faber by 8:15 am for injection of some radioactive stuff, then scan at 11:15! Injection fine then went up into lobby and logged into work and got some stuff done....I guess entire Dana Faber building has free wireless for patients and families! Scan was fine except for head.....they started the scan at my head, but I couldn't do it....this 4 ft sq camera came directly down, almost hit my nose it was so close and I could not breathe! So they started at my chin and worked down...that was uneventful. At the end...they took the head pictures by having me turn my head to the side so I could breathe and see light...2 1/2 min for each side...it was bearable since I could see light. Finally done, I went straight to work since I had a busy afternoon. Then came Weds. Noon appointment, Bernie coming with me (he took the day off!)....I went to work as normal and left around 10:40 or so. Boy that was the longest morning.....straight home, picked up Bernie and we were in Boston by 11:45 or so. Doctor waked in and said...Good News Bone Scan Clean!! Those were the best words I had heard in days!!!! She immediately went into, but we need to figure out what the cyst is. XRay showed Cyst, contained within the bone. Next step is MRI to get a better look. NO MRI for me...they got me in there once and I'll never be able to get back in especially if I can't be positioned to see light! Through all this Bernie never said a word...then all of a sudden he said...Can you tell me 100% she does not have Cancer in her Bones? Doctor said NO, I can tell you 95% sure not, but we have been "burnt" before!!!! So we agreed on next steps....MRI under IV Conscious Sedation. So, her office would co-ordinate anesthesia and MRI and call with appointment, we would then schedule appointment for results the next day. Not sure what MRI will show, but if same "unsure" what it is...we may have to schedule a biopsy. But first step is MRI, which can tell alot!! So, they called the next day....MRI is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27th and results appointment on the 28th at noon! For the MRI...no food or drink after midnight on the 26th...arrive at B&W Hospital for 8:40Am....MRI scheduled for 9:40am!!! So we are in a wait and see mode right now! Ok for me....pretty busy both work and home....Both Kids go back to school this weekend and I'm heading to NJ on Monday for meetings. I'll be back late weds night, then start radiation on Thursday!!!
Now for my take...Onc said she wasn't sure what else it might be....so my take even if it is cancer, it must be just the start...so we've caught it early and can hopefully kill it....I hear radiation works great to kill cyst/tumors in the bone!!!
So like I've said before...only the good die young, so I'll be around for a while longer!!! I'm just considering this another little bump in the road!!!!
